Spinal Cord Injury
A spinal cord injury (SCI) is injury to the spinal cord results in sensory and motor loss. It is part of CNS that transfer the information between brain and body part.Injuries can occur due to accidents,falls or other diseases like infections or tumours.
There are two types of SCI
Complete SCI: Total loss of sensation and motor function below the level of injury.
Incomplete SCI: Partial loss below the level of injuries.
Causes:
- Motor vehicle accidents
- Falls
- Sports injuries
- Acts of violence
- Diseases like polio, spina bifida, or cancer,tumours,tuberculosis
Symptoms:
- Loss of movement
- Loss of sensation (including the ability to feel heat, cold, and touch)
- Loss of bowel or bladder control
- Exaggerated reflexes or spasms
- Difficulty breathing, coughing, or clearing secretions from the lungs
Treatment: while SCI injuries it can not reversed quickly.
Medications: like steroids to reduce swelling
Surgery : to stabilize the spine
Rehabilitation: including physical therapy
In which passive movement,functional mobility exercises,sitting posture exercises functional electrical stimulation,hydrotherapy.
Assistive devices, such as wheelchairs or braces.
